Beide Vlamingen werden in 1860 door een Franstalige rechtbank ten onrechte ter dood werden veroordeeld en terechtgesteld. Mogelijk vond Ensors bijtende satire ook zijn oorsprong in meer autobiografische elementen: het faillisssement van zijn vader in 1875, of, toen zeer recent, de rechtszaak tegen Ensors moeder in het kader van een banaal misbruik van copyright. In 1892-1893 stond zij terecht voor de illegale reproductie van een schilderij van de Antwerpse schilder Jan Van Beers.
