Vooral zijn grote figuurstukken getuigen van een grote soberheid en klassieke eenvoud. De bewogenheid van zijn Nederlandse doeken maakt plaats voor een poëtische sfeer van verstilde gelijkmoedigheid. De behoefte aan orde en stabiliteit, de zogenaamde 'retour à l'ordre', die na de Eerste Wereldoorlog in geheel Europa het artistieke klimaat bepaalt, komt vooral in het werk van De Smet tot uiting. In zijn zoektocht naar evenwicht schildert de kunstenaar na 1926 een aantal jaren sterk geabstraheerde composities, met een tijdelijke voorkeur voor motieven uit het stedelijke milieu. In de jaren '30 neemt hij opnieuw landelijke thema's op, als het dorp, de boeren en het volkse vertier in een minder strenge stijl.
