Al snel integreert de kunstenaar zich in het bruisende kunstleven en vindt hij aansluiting bij progressieve jongeren die de officiële kunst verwerpen en artistieke vrijheid bepleiten. Zijn engagement in het vroege Belgische modernisme vertaalt zich tien jaar later in zijn lidmaatschap van Les XX, maar de kunstenaar sterft enkele dagen voor de opening van de eerste tentoonstelling van de kring.\nPantazis is een brugfiguur die in bewondering achterom keek naar het werk van Gustave Courbet, maar in de latere jaren van zijn korte carrière in de ban kwam van het Franse impressionisme waarbij hij zelf zijn invloed deed gelden, onder meer op Guillaume Vogels.
